Chicago August 2016

Chicago and Lis and Bruce

The Springsteen tour was headed for Chicago in the final US leg. I had seen him 4 times already this tour but now was the chance to take my eldest to her very first Springsteen show, i.e. first relevant live musical performance ever.

So I flew in solo and met her and her new roommate for dinner. Sweet girl. Reservations had been made at a Chinese restaurant that carves Peking duck table side. Another friend was invited and we enjoyed dinner and the show. Duck followed by duck soup followed by duck rice. All from the same duck. There was little problem eating this delicious food in the packed busy authentic joint. Plans were made then to bring Mom back here asap. Spoiler alert, we did.

The next morning was concert day. We met for coffee and headed out to explore neigborhoods that are old and upcoming. Some great places like Au Cheval and hipster pricey bar Aviary. Owned by Alinea.

We walked a street festival and smelled the goodness and the camel. I guess anything can happen in Chicago and a camel did. We found Corgi shopping bags while looking for a light jacket for the place. I forgot mine and froze on the way to Chi.

We didn't know that when we approached an unmarked door continued to look for an actual door then spoke to the suit in front. He spoke into his mic...in his sleeve...We have a party of two here is there any room?...looking at us as if maybe we didn't know the password. He escorted us in and we were greeted and walked into a large booth filled empty room.          We sat and smiled and sneezed douche a couple times before deciding not to walk out and go ahead and try their $25 cocktails. Not a typo, I checked. It was a show and the pretense did not lead to the waiter inside. He was gracious and made it interesting. The drinks are over the top and you get a show watching what everyone else orders and the cocktail reveal and circus act that is involved in many orders. Time for dinner and we asked for a check right as someone walked by saying they were headed for Bruce tonight. We said hey and smiled to them with visual high fives both ways.

Off to dinner at the Little Goat. This is the casual diner little sister of The Girl and the Goat, one of Chicago's hottest restaurants. We were seated at the bar in what were the last 2 seats in the restaurant. It was a warm day and the kitchen bar was warm too but we ordered beers and laughed with the waitress and ordered goat sloppy joes.  Perfect pre show food. We chatted and ate and enjoyed the buzz around us. When it was time we asked for the check stating our concert destination when teh couple next to us said...Us too!...And so it went.

As we walked outside an entire family in Bruce shirts getting into the car headed for the revival. We walked a few blocks and arrived ready to treat my oldest to what had ailed her for so long in her youth. Not again Dad!

Tickets were in the prime very back row of the United Center. It didn't and doesn't matter. The show will reach. As we marched to the top we were greeted by a group of women immediately grilling us...are you fun?!...I stopped and looked and said well this is around show #30 so I hope its gonna be fun. They all then welcomed us as family. I let them know of E's first show and they had one with them too. Mom and daughter had seen him together 7 times, 20 for Mom.

And off we went, nearly four hours of jumping singing dancing and screaming song titles to see who could be first. We were exhausted and decided to walk a ways to get out of the crowd to split an Uber home.

Monday she had gotten us Cub tickets. My very first game at Wrigley!! We started the morning with a walk around the "bean" at our favorite go to walk around and love Chicago place, Millenium Park. We walked and enjoyed the bright summer day with many photo opps along the way. Down to the world class Chicago Museum of Art to drink in the outstanding collection.

Now it was lunch and our chance to eat at the Purple Pig. A favorite in town we try to hit every time as much as we don't like to repeat too much the Pig always has something we never had and something we love to have. So we go. Alot.

We headed for the iconic Murphys bar for a beer before the game. We explored and I awed and watched the EL pass nearly overhead. Into the game early to see every inch of this park we can ahead of time. Decent seats that gave way to better seats in an after midnight barn burning overtime thriller. The place exploded and sang the Cubs win song the way they would the coming October as they clinched the World Series in a game 7 roller coaster showdown.

What a great night! We walked back to the Addison CTA station and boarded in opposite directions home. The train was packed and even at 12:45am a sense of giddiness on the prospects for a history making season. Back to the very nice Residence Inn River North.

Next morning was back to..oh, SAN DIEGO!

Movin' to San Diego

San Diego Bound

It's always been our desire to someday put our feet up in San Diego and retire. We were leasing out the family home and while it was getting old it was in decent shape and brought a good stream of income. We had recently updated our home in Porter Ranch. Once it was done we looked at each other and jokingly said to each other it looked great so lets sell.

Be careful what you wish for.

T was offered a job with the University in San Diego and now we had the chance to go earlier than we planned. We looked for a rental in SD and became quickly dismayed with the prices. But we pressed on   and found a "storage unit" for our stuff and ourselves and our dogs.

It was an agonizing decision to leave our life of 23 years behind and begin the next chapter of the big adventure. But we closed our eyes and jumped. I had never lived anywhere else. It was time.

We ordered movers, rented a house, leased our house and made the move 7/25/16.

And we haven't looked back. San Diego is a wonderful vibrant city with city and coastal beauty combined.

Now the adventure begins to remodel the house and move in maybe in 2017?

 Stay tuned.

Sonoma Graduation May 2016

Joe's Graduation
Sonoma May 2016

We arrived in Oakland with Em to meet Lis who had landed 30 minutes earlier from Midway. Timing was great with thanks to T and gratitude to Southwest Airlines. #LUVSWA Always on time and on point both flights arrived as advertised.

Grabbed our rental box van. The car had to be big enough to carry all of us and a driver for our wine tasting to come.    The four of us drove to Napa to show the girls the town, neither had ever visited wine country. Our first stop as you might guess was Hog Island at the Oxbow Market in Napa.  Joe arrived to join us for a wonderful lunch al fresco under the shining Napa sun. Even got Lis to try an oyster and well, that will be her last. We shared delicious food and some wine then drove through downtown Sonoma to our Santa Rosa home at the Marriott Courtyard. A wonderful spot close to everything in wine country and much more reasonable than Napa proper. Close to Russian River, the coast, Healdsburg, etc.

Our first night was a party planned by Joe's friends at a rented house in the hills overlooking the beautiful region. We were greeted by girls and their parents who apparently had formed a Joe fan club. Everyone sang his praises and the genuine admiration of our #1 son made Mom and I proud to tears. He is an amazing young man with a bright future. We shared sandwiches and appetizers and pot luck goodies while sipping on some of the finest wine in the area not to mention the great craft beer. Joe works at MacRostie winery in Healdsburg and some of his friends also work "in the industry". The selection was first class and amazing while we were standing and chatting watching the glorious sunset. The evening was no less than epic and we enjoyed meeting every person and smiled broadly hearing them gush about Mr. B.

Saturday saw the big day. Graduation in 4 years! A true feat at a state school in California. The morning started with wine tasting-what else?

MacRostie had arranged for us a private room with lunch ordered from a local incredible sandwich place. The room, the views, the hosts, the wines, were all spectacular, we truly got the royal treatment and imbibed along with being educated about the terroir. It's all about the terroir.
Joe was showered with gifts and hugs as we enjoyed our pre-grad wine country "tailgater".

Off to the afternoon graduation ceremony early enough to park and get a seat.

The campus is beautiful and we found some spots up high on the bleachers. A good vantage point and in the shade! The ceremony was perfect including the inspiring speech from a young veteran who had lost his legs but not his incredible uplifting spirit. Joe stayed to the very end, many diploma and  dash but this is a once in a lifetime event to be savored and remembered. Dinner reservations at Willi's wine bar, a local happy place for us for many years. We brought our own wine and enjoyed the tapas style meal with our usual we-eat-almost-anything gusto. A landmark day had come and gone, in an unforgettable way.

Sunday was wine country day. The girls have not done a wine tasting tour of this area and it was time we all shared it together. Kids are more fun after 21!  We met our hired driver who took our rental and shuttled us to three places Joe had reserved. Each one was a delight and our 6 hours went faster than we imagined. We counted the number of times Mom cried and used music and stories to encourage the count. The baby of the family graduated college, she's entitled.

After another perfect day in wine country we went to another favorite spot, Rossos pizzaria. Go. Order the piadina. And on the  way you might see wild turkeys just walking down the street. Yes we did. Get a glass of wine and watch the open pizza oven orchestration. We closed the place after 9pm and headed to The Russian River Brewing Company for a Pliny the Elder. This IPA is a legendary beer in the craft world at the moment. It's sibling Pliny the Younger is seasonal and goes fast and requires standing in an our long line down the block. After a taste and a purchase to enjoy back home with a friend, we headed back for some well earned rest.

Monday was travel day and we walked a local farmers market with coffee. Lis was meeting a friend in SF so we dropped her at the BART in Oakland for the 3 stops over/under the bay and we headed with Em to Oakland, back to Burbank for what we didn't know then was the last time. Drama? No. Travel adventure? Yes!

The next post explains.

Of course we had a corgi sighting!
